Interview : Stabby

Known for his chest-hitting percussion, and 'stabby' basses, British musician/producer,Dean Cawley a.k.a Stabby, is an EDM producer.A rocker at heart, Stabby carries a lot of his rock influence into the music that he creates.

Q- A warm welcome to RAWRR, Stabby! Thank you for taking out your time for this interview with us.

Thank you for asking me to be on!

Q- What inspired you to get into the EDM scene?

Well, as a youngling, I listened to Daft Punk and Justice almost everyday. I started to produce naturally because I was always into music. At the time I first started producing I never intended to make any sort of EDM music. I actually wanted to make metalcore and rock/blues in the style of Gary Moore, Coheed and Cambria, and a lot of other great bands, but shit I ended up producing EDM and it eventually took over.

Q- Tell us something about your music?

Imagine a combination of mellow beautiful synths with out of this world bass and ultimate swing/rhythm. I want my music to be enjoyable anywhere, in your car, on your iphone, in the club, wherever man, as long as you can listen and appreciate the emotion that went into the music you know, that's really the main reason I make music, it's kinda like a canvas for me to paint my emotions onto, if that makes sense.

Q- What made you choose the name "Stabby"?

That's actually a funny story, and pretty damn cliché too haha, but what happened was I dreamt that I had just escaped a prison, it was in this dark street, the street lights were orangey-amber, and there was a lot of fog, my prison mate looks to me and says "Hey Stabby, you alright?", I looked at him confused and asked why he called me stabby and he replied "How do you think you got in prison", hahaha I'm honestly not lying.

Q- What do you like most about making music?

I love the freedom. I love how Ableton is my canvas and my Macbook's trackpad is the brush. Hell, I wish I could draw/paint, but I guess music is more my thing. I love being able to convert my hardest points in life into music, I love being able to tell a story with sounds. I love messing around with everything, but most of all, I just really love music. So I make it in my free time.

Q- Do you perform live? If yes, how were those moments?

Performing live is always fun, I love how I'm able to just for that moment be the centre of attention with my own music. That's awesome.

Q- How does it feel to be an EDM producer?

It feels pretty damn awesome, I love EDM, but in general I love electronic music. It amazes sometimes to think that people are making music out of weird sounds a computer gives him/her.

Q- You released your EP "Clouds" few months ago. How was it producing the album?

Producing the album took a total of a year or so of constant work, it was me and my computer and a lot of tutorials later, I finally got to the point where I was getting my own unique sound and somehow I decided to call it the 'clouds' sound. There's also going to be a Clouds sequel eventually, I'm getting around to working on that.
